Healthy New York Article Series

What is the Healthy America Article Series?

Though we are all American’s, we are all different when it comes to our health. We are each vulnerable to particular health risks based on our genetics, habits and local environment. DocMatcher’s ‘Healthy America’ article series evaluates the health status of the nation by focusing more locally, on the health of specific geographic areas.

The data used is compiled from multiple sources, including government data, health expert interviews and peer-reviewed journal articles. These articles do not serve as comprehensive or authoritative information of a particular location, disease or subject. Rather, they act as a snapshot of the health of an area in order to help us decipher trends and understand our risks. This knowledge helps us to develop healthy habits for the future.

Search for your neighborhood’s SpotlightHealth to see how your neighborhoods health measures up.

Our first series is dedicated to DocMatcher.com's birthplace  - Brooklyn, New York.

Why is having a regular doctor important?

Data from the most recent NYC Community Survey showed that more than 1.3 Million (1/5th) New Yorkers did not have a regular health care provider, 80% of whom had adequate insurance. Having a primary care doctor is less common in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx than in Manhattan or Staten Island.

Neighborhood Profile - Northwest Brooklyn

(Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Clinton Hill, Downtown, Fort Greene, Park Slope, Red Hook)

Twenty-one percent of people in Northwest Brooklyn are without a regular provider. In Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights, and Park Slope 19.1 % of residents are uninsured. Due to the current state of the economy and unemployment rates, these figures are rising rapidly. Lack of insurance and improved worries about employment has lead residents to seek less primary preventative care and to more use of Emergency Departments for basic medical care. In a push to improve the health of New York City residents, NYC has designed surveillance health initiatives targeting the cities most plaguing and preventable health conditions.
